Who needs downloadable video?

Over in Japan, NEC have released their new V601N phone. At first glance, it doesn’t seem a whole lot more interesting than the e606 available in the UK, with a familiar looking keypad and form factor. The killer bit is the fact that it has a terrestrial analog TV tuner built in.

This is apparently the first ‘phone of it’s type in Japan, so it’s quite possible it’s the first in the world. Should be interesting to see how this technology picks up, and whether content providers are willing to accept it where users’ are now able to watch video for free rather than as part of their own paid subscription models.
