That's only right sometimes. I have an intermittent problem with that error on my network but some systems have new windows installs on new partitions with NO Symantec software anywhere on the system.
I have narrowed it down to a problem with our Netgear FVS318 router or our Cayman cable modem sold to us by BellSouth. I'm going to try dumbing down the firmware on the Netgear but beyond that I have no idea.
So the Symantec solution is only for some or most circumstances surrounding that error.

I had the same problem! I disabled the anti-virus check on my mail, then it worked! Thanks! But then I put it on again and it worked anyway... whatever. :)
I hate Microsoft - their suggestion was to unistall anti-virus!
- kenokid on June 1, 2004
I have no anti-virus software running; I'm using a Linksys router with no special filters set. I was trying to send a picture from my trip to a msn.com address and got this error.
I sent the same JPEG file to myself and it gave me the error 3 times before completing. I did the same with my daughter and got the error 2 times before it completed.
What is up with that?
- Romer3r on June 3, 2004
I have the same problem, If I use OutlookExpress or Eudora6.1 I can receive, send, receive/sent message. But OLK2002 is not working properly
- Mark Silvia on August 12, 2005
I too am having the same problem. I strongly suspect my router - which is a Linksys BEFSR41 - which previously had an issue passing through VPN until I updated to the latest firmware. I have also turned on e-mail scanning/anti-spam and increased my timeout. It works when I connect elsewhere. I guess it's time to retire that dusty old router and get a new one.

One of my users PC's frequently has this error, but she already has the NOD32 Antivirus email scanning turned off.
She is very annoyed by this Outlook behaviour - although I know we can just ignore it!

I have had this problem with Outlook for several days now everything I have tried has not worked. Has anyone got any ideas other than the ones on the comments above?
I am seriously considering not using Outlook but have no other contact and email management system that is so useful when not connected to the internet.

What happens if you receive an: "Outlook Error 0x80042108" but do not have Norton installed on the computer?
- Connie on February 9, 2006
I have been getting same error message on Outlook also. However, not just Outlook. I normally use IncrediMail - I have for years. All of a sudden, on my two PC's that use Windows XP SP2, I cannot receive mail from my webmail at pop.secureserver.net (with GoDaddy) but I can send mail fine. It says either "fails to connect" or "unable to connect to incoming server", no matter what email manager I use - Outlook, IncrediMail or Thunderbird.
But on my two PC's that run Windows XP SP2, I have no problem connecting & receiving email!
I have tried everything everyone here & elsewhere has suggested. My DSL provider can't find the problem. GoDaddy says they have no problem from their end & can't help me.
I purchased a new router, but there's still the same problem. I have also disabled all firewalls & antivirus.
No-one can help me! I am desperate. Any ideas?

Connie, I am having the same problem with godaddy.com and have the same issues. Who is your ISP? I am using Fuse/Zoomtown in Cincinnati.
- Connie on March 13, 2006
I just use Verizon DSL. I do not use their software, just use line to get access to internet. It is not the ISP - because I have 4 computers connected to same DSL service & router. The two using WIN XP SP1 can receive email just fine through either IncrediMail or Outlook. The two using WIN XP SP2 CANNOT receive email. Is there something in the registry of SP2? It is not firewall or anti virus issues, I've been there/done that. HELP!
- Michael on March 13, 2006
I am still having the same problem. Fuse/Zoomtown says that godaddy is blocking my IP address and Godaddy said it is a Microsoft Outlook issue.
- Reinhardt on March 22, 2006

- CE on March 30, 2006
If I delete outlook will I loose all of my previous emails? Or am I just deleting the account?
- Rob on June 20, 2006
I was getting this same error and could not figure it out for the life of me. I tried disabling all virus scanning, didn't work. I contacted my email provider and ISP, and they couldn't see any problems. If you are having the same problem and none of the previous solutions have worked I may have the answer. In Outlook, go to tools->email accounts. Hit next, choose your email account and click change. Click the more settings button and go to the advanced tab. Put a check in the "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" box for your incoming server and hit OK. Click test account settings. You should get a message that says it didn't work. Go back to "more settings" and the advanced tab. Uncheck the "This server requires..." box. Make sure the correct port number (usually 110) shows up again and click OK. If you test the settings again it should complete without errors. I have no idea why this works. The settings were correct the whole time. For some reason changing them and then changing them back fixes it. I had to do this on about 15 computers in my office, and it worked for each one.
- Marco Coladipietro on June 29, 2006
Rob was right on the money. I was having the same exact problem and pulling my hair out. I did exactly as he said and now everything is working just fine. Thanks Rob!
- Westin Rink on July 25, 2006
Rob - You are exactly right. I've spent two weeks and hours on the phone trying to fix this and your solution worked! Thanks so much.

I have a sony laptop win xp sp2, norton internet security 2006, outlook 2003 built in wifi and a verizon broadband card. Got error 0x80042108 when sending and receiving from my local network using my built-in wifi. When i switched to the verizon broadband card outlook would work fine! No errors! I wanted to use my local wireless while in the office of course. So the only thing that worked so far is disabling NIS 2006. Now i can send and receive using my local wireless connection and built-in wifi card.
- Joel G. on July 27, 2006
Further testing... In my case I just have to disable Norton Firewall - part of Norton Internet Security 2006. I can leave enabled all email scanning and anti-spam options and outlook now works fine. I then turned on windows firewall as a temporary fix.
- Joe on July 27, 2006
I am seeing the same problem with my GoDaddy POP account. I spend few days with them and they are saying it's my configuration.
I found a workaround by telnet to pop.secureserver.net 110; you have to try few times to get connected. Once you get connected use the POP to download the mail.
Good luck!

I was able to solve this problem on my outlook 2003 program just by going into add/remove programs and removing the most recent critical update for outlook - junk email filter. I tried everything listed by others, but, this worked for me. Try it, you can always install it again. Hope this helps.

I looked over the Microsoft list of possible causes. I noticed it was dated May 2, 2006. If all of this were true, why did my MS Outlook and McAfee Anti-Virus only become unworkable more than 6 months later? More specifically; why only last night?
I ran Ad-Aware; Bingo! - 8 critical objects from guess who! With these removed, a short defragmentation of the HD, I enabled McAfee; everything returned to normal operation.
I want to thank MS for wasting my time and the valuable time of my ISP.
I hope this will work for you too.
- erik on February 28, 2007
My solution was a modification to Rob's suggestion on June 20, 2006: I now permantely use "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" box and, in addition, I left the default port when the SSL box is selected stay at 995. For now, I have no problem with my Outlook 2002 and Norton Internet Security 2006.
- macca on March 19, 2007
I have tried all above ideas - No good! At first I was getting a similar error message with 'outlook 98'. I tried everything, then installed Outlook 2002, tried everything again! Still can't receive mail, but have never had any problems sending....
Can anyone help ???

I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM BUT ONLY WHEN TRYING TO SEND AN EMAIL WITH A LARGE ATTACHMENT. I DID EVERYTHING BELOW AND NOTHING WORKED UNTIL I WENT INTO MY EMAIL PROGRAM AND INCREASED THE SERVER TIMEOUT TO 2 MIN AND 20 SEC. SINCE THEN i HAVE HAD NOT PROBLEMS.
- eric on May 25, 2007
This problem seemed to fix itself for me about a month ago, now it's back, but only on my user accounts. I can receive email/login to incoming mail server with my system's admin account, but not running as admin. I tried everything the first time, not sure exactly if or what worked to solve the problem, but I'm not going to uninstall Norton AGAIN! All the settings are the same on user and admin accounts. This is a nightmare.

I had the same problem in Outlook 2003. My scenario is like, I have two POP3 accounts one for external mail and one internal. I was getting the same problem and had tried everything mentioned above but went in vein.
The solution I have setup is to put all the accounts in different Send/Receive group from Tools->Options->Mail Setup->Send/Receive and to give both a different "Schedule automatic Send/Receive time". After this the quick send/receive won't work but you will get all mails in the scheduled interval. Hope this helps...
- Highwinder on September 8, 2008
None of these solutions have worked for me. Outlook is a total piece of crap. I'm about to spend $250 of my employers' money on a tech support call to Microsuck. I will post the solution here when I get off of what I assume will be a marathon phone call that lasts hours (as usual).

Thank you so much for the help. I did the click/unclick of the ssl box and it seems to work. This problem happens every time there is a windows update.
